History

Additrom School (registered as a limited liability company registered under the company's code (Act 179, 1963) in March 22, 2001) started in January 1948 as a small nursery in the garden of the residence of Mr. Alfred Addy, the father of the present Proprietress, Madam Lilian Addy. The name Additrom, which means Addy's garden, is an amalgamation of the family name Addy and the word 'trom', a term in Ga meaning garden. The school then known as the Additrom Home School, developed rapidly into an all purpose educational centre which included Nursery, Primary, Middle School and a Technical Department to cater for the educational needs of the children in Adabraka and its environs.

Following Ghana's independence in 1957, the 1961 Education Act (Act 87) initiated by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah absorbed the Additrom School under the Accra City Council (ACC) as part of the core mandate to provide free primary and middle school education in the country. The school under the management of ACC deteriorated both in physical infrastructure and quality of education provided over the years even with several promptings by the Proprietress to the ACC on the need to salvage the school from total ruin.

On 20 September 1982, the school reverted to its status as a private school following several letters written and legal action undertaken by the Proprietress with the support from Togbe Kwaku Amenyodu I (Mr Dowetin), the founder of the Datus Complex Schools and then Chairman of the Regional Day Care Centres Association. The young Additrom that was born was therefore a scion of the stalwart parent Additrom Home School from which inspiration was drawn and whose ideas and ideals it sought to restore.

In 1982, the school began with a total student population of 30 (14 girls and 16 boys) with the first management team comprising of the Proprietress, Mr. Appiah Bonney the Headmaster, and Miss Elizabeth Bediako. In 1992, the school had grown to a total population of 345 and teaching staff strength of 17. The school graduated a total of 11 JSS students in 1992 .

About the Founder

Alfred Yaya Addy was born in February 16 1892 in the Adjabeng House in Accra to Samuel Tetteh Addy. He was a very industrious young man and found himself working for the United Africa Company (UAC), a British trading company, at a very young age where he was posted to Koforidua in the Eastern Region. Following several years working for UAC, he subsequently retired around 1945, returning to Adabraka with his family including the proprietress, Ms. Lilian Addy, then his sixth child. He set up his family at the now Additrom House.

One year following his return (circa 1946), Alfred observed a dearth in educational opportunities in the Adabraka environ and saw an opportunity to contribute to the community. He subsequently set up various educational options including:

  • a nursery school for children below 5 years,
  • a primary school (primary one to six) to accommodate students between the ages of 6 to 10 years, and
  • a night school to accommodate both children in the secondary school as well as professional adults taking professional courses.

These educational options for the Adabraka community were operated through to when Ghana gained independence in 1957. Following Ghana's independence in 1957, the 1961 Education Act (Act 87) initiated by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah absorbed the Additrom School under the Accra City Council (ACC) as part of the core mandate to provide free primary and middle school education in the country. Alfred Addy passed on in December 18 1971.
